Maplewave Receives International Workplace Award

Halifax, Nova Scotia – March 14, 2018
In recognition of its efforts to create a healthy, high-performing work environment, Maplewave will receive the American Psychological Association’s (APA) 2018 Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 22nd, 2018.

Maplewave is one of four employers from across North America to receive the award this year, winning the small business (for-profit) category. Maplewave is a previous winner of the Nova Scotia Psychological Association’s provincial-level Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award, qualifying it to be nominated for the APA award.

Maplewave excelled in its efforts to foster employee involvement, health and safety, employee growth and development, work-life balance and employee recognition. The business’ profit-sharing, two-way performance review, discretionary health spending accounts, paid time off for personal appointments and regular staff consultations are several examples of the workplace practices that helped it earn a 2018 award.

Maplewave’s psychologically healthy workplace practices have reaped rewards for both the organization and its employees. In the past two years, Maplewave’s employees have shown increased engagement, higher levels of initiative and higher job satisfaction.

“We have a saying here that nothing is more sacred than doing the right thing”, says Maplewave CEO, Adam Baggs. “It’s the yardstick that we measure all of our decisions against. So, when it comes to the health and wellness of our employees, we strive to do everything we can because it is the right thing to do”.

Maplewave’s VP of HR, Leigh Anne Dingwall, explains that despite this honour, their work is not over. “We are very excited to be recognized and are proud of the work we have done to get here. But that said, the most exciting part is we have lots of work still to do. I look forward to where this will take us.”

Maplewave’s profit-sharing program helps keep employees invested in the business’s performance. Along with a comprehensive group benefits package, employees receive a health spending account of up to $300 per year for health-related expenses that may not be covered by insurance. The company’s comprehensive performance review program is an ongoing, collaborative process between managers and staff.

“Employees notice when an organization legitimately cares about their well-being and are more likely to be satisfied with their jobs, committed to the organization and motivated to do their best,” says David W. Ballard, PsyD, MBA, head of APA’s Center for Organizational Excellence, which hosts the annual awards. “Organizations like Maplewave recognize the importance of creating a work environment where employees and the organization can thrive.”

APA’s Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards showcase the very best from among the award winners recognized by APA’s affiliated state, provincial and territorial psychological associations. Nominees have been evaluated on their workplace practices in the areas of employee involvement, health and safety, employee growth and development, work-life balance and employee recognition. Awards are given to for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, as well as government, military and educational institutions.
